With the three-layer diffractive optical element (DO), image stabilization (IS) and the ultrasonic motor (USM), the EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM is a triumph of precision optics. The lens sets new standards in compact size and high image quality. IS technology allows razor sharp images at shutter speeds, while rear focusing USM delivers fast, silent auto focus.
The DO factor
The EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM is the world’s only lens with a DO element. The application of a new three-layer DO lens element allows not only fast but also provides unparalleled imaging performance. The DO element is combined with normal refraction elements to compensate for color aberration. This level of correction of color aberration was previously only possible through the use of fluorite element and UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) lenses. The result is superb image quality and a very compact housing.
Image Stabilizer
Canon’s renowned Image Stabilizer (IS) technology compensates for approximately three stops without perceptible increase in image blur. This increases the number of situations in which hand-held photography and shooting without a tripod. Movement in a specific direction is detected as conscious panning. Corrections in the relevant direction canceled and this will shake-avoided.
Ultrasonic Motor
The ring-type USM delivers fast, accurate, efficient and virtually noiseless auto focusing. The use of USM also allows full manual override without damage to the autofocus mechanism.
Appealing background blur
The aperture is controlled with an EMD (electromagnetic diaphragm). Changes in aperture for fast, precise control and the lens incorporates a circular aperture diaphragm for pleasing background blur.
Geared to EOS
The pattern of the lens is tuned to the latest EOS range, extracting the maximum benefit is derived from the speed of the lens. Distance information is based on very accurate E-TTL II metering and is also used for flash photography.
With an eye for the environment
Fully in line with the stringent environmental Canon is conducted for the optical components of the lens features only lead-free glass.
